Augsburg was an imperial city within the Holy Roman Empire. The city was
not ruled by a prince, such as a count or duke, but was ruled by an
honorable council that was under direct jurisdiction of the emperor. The
city government encouraged whichever religious faith was prevalent
among the members of the Honorable Council. This resulted in political
competition between Protestant and Catholic politicians on the council.
